What is Rhythmic Gymnastics?
In U.S when the term "gymnastics" comes to mind, immediately one thinks of tumbling, backflips, beams and bars. However, throw the word "rhythmic" in front of the word gymnastics and people immediately become confused. While the beautiful sport of rhythmic gymnastics is not as near as popular in the United States as it is in Europe and Russia, the sport is slowly making its way to the minds of the general public.
Rhythmic Gymnastics Defined: A form of gymnastics emphasizing dance-like rhythmic routines, usually accentuated with the use of either a ball, hoop, rope, clubs or ribbon.
Breaking it Down:
Rhythmic gymnastics is much more than running around of the floor, twirling a ribbon in front of the judges. The sport combines ballet, dance, extreme flexibility, strength and A LOT of hand-eye coordination. Another special feature of rhythmic gymnastics, is it can either be preformed individually or as a set of five other girls all preforming at the same time. These gymnasts make complex throws and catches and maneuver each apparatus around their body, while still making it appear effortless. While working the apparatus, rhythmic gymnasts also must complete a certain number of jumps, leaps, pivots, and balances throughout the routine.
