1. Know what you are getting yourself into.
Rhythmic gymnastics is more than just an after school activity. If you want to be successful in the sport, a gymnast needs to be willing to make a full time commitment.
2. Time Management
As you improve as a rhythmic gymnast, practice hours will increase. Learning effective time management will be extremely helpful when it comes to balancing a crazy practice schedule. While in countries like Russia, girls go to specials schools that accommodate to practice schedules, in U.S, gymnasts do not have that option. Being able to maintain a balance between practice and schoolwork is key to success in both aspects of a gymnast’s life. Many rhythmic gymnastics are so passionate about the sport that they chose to disregard schoolwork and grades. Competition season can be pretty intense and time consuming so it is important to plan out studying accordingly.

Only you know your own limit. Rhythmic gymnastics is very hard on the body and if one is not careful, serious injuries can occur. A gymnast needs to be aware of when enough is enough. While many girls tend to ignore pain because they desperately want to be in the gym and improve, they can actually be worsening their skill level. Ignored injuries can result in worsening conditions and ultimately having to take more time out of the gym.

Because rhythmic gymnasts spend so much time in the gym, it is important to form a good relationship with your coach. It is also important to treat your coach with respect. While at times it may seem as if she is being unfair, but a good coach will always have her gymnast’s best interests in mind. For many rhythmic gymnasts, they spend more time with their coaches than they do their own family. In order for a rhythmic gymnast to be successful she needs to have an intimate bond with her coach so valuable trust system can be established.
